Another fine autumn day found another fine crop of Southern Oregon’s premier runners challenging one another through the foothills encircling the Rogue Valley. The weather was genuinely pleasant for another year of this event now entering its third decade.
The course saw a few adjustments this year to even up leg lengths and to continue looking toward a future date when a pristine bike path will run from Ashland to the Rogue River. Because of these adjustments, many new leg records were established.
The High School Division was again ruled by Phoenix High’s fine harriers, with some help from North Medford. The female dominated team accounted for 5 new leg records to stand alongside the other 5 from previous years. No other team has had such domination of this annual event.
In addition, many fine runners from Southern Oregon University’s cross-country team also helped to set new standards for speed on the men’s side of the standings. JJ Moses, Darren Goff, Trevor Palmer, and Cam Eroon teamed up as the “Savage” Milers to win the overall title in 6:06:15, also setting a new standard for four-person teams in the process.
Meg Rawlings, Lynn Rossman, Felicia Hazel, Elena McKinnon, and Pim Solof’s team named Russ and Vickie’s Team captured the female crown in 9:31:38 while the Mixed title went to Faded Genes from Coos Bay and Roseburg. The team was captained by Pete Dawson, race director for the annual Roseburg-to-Coos bay Relay, and included Brigid Kennady, Claudia Benn, Pete, Lynette Butler, and Chris Hinzman. Their overall time was 9:19:44.
This annual event also saw the emergence of another competition: the solo 50 km. run. Peter Fish set a standard of 6:26:30 for the 70+ age group while Aaron Reed established a course record of 4:06:20.
Runners were treated to hot chicken soup and wonderful sourdough bread at the climax of another successful relay. Next year’s relay will be held on Nov. 17 and fliers will be included in the Southern Oregon Sizzler newsletter and available at our local running stores and clubs.
Sincerely,
Clayton Gillette and Mike Davis, co-race directors
