Rogue Valley Challenge Relay

Nov. 17th fine autumn day found many Southern Oregon’s premier runners engaged in the Rogue Valley Challenge 100 Km. (62.4 mi.) Relay through the foothills encircling the Bear Creek Valley. The weather was genuinely pleasant for another year with some early fog, followed by warm sun, and finally, an afternoon of rain.

Overall winners this year were the Speedo Bandidos in a new four-person team record of 6:27:13. This team was made up of Joe Griffin, Ixel Sanchez, Pete Baughman, and John Leuthold. The Terrorizing Tornadoes ran away with the High School Division with a new course record of 6:43:39. Other overall course records were set in the following categories (the age of the team is the total age of the runners): Female 100-199, 4 Depends on 1, 10:37:39; Female 251+, Hammer Sisters, 10:27:19; Mixed 100-199, VW, 7:46:30; and Male 250-259, Jefferson State Gents, 7:14:24. Many individual leg records were set, with Ixel Sanchez, Lauren Morgan, Drew Jordan, and Joe Rath setting at least two new leg records. Our youngest runner ever to complete the relay is this year’s Kiana Sweem, at 10 years of age. The event also saw Tom Pelsor do a solo 100 km. run in 14:08:23.

Runners were treated to hot chicken soup and wonderful sourdough bread at the climax of another successful relay. Next year’s relay will be held on Nov. 15 and fliers will be included in the Southern Oregon Runners newsletter and available at our local running stores and clubs.
